NEET, or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, is a national-level medical entrance exam conducted in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate medical courses (MBBS/BDS) in various government and private medical colleges in India.
Here are the steps to appear in NEET and the qualifying criteria:
Step 1: Eligibility Criteria To be eligible to appear in NEET, a candidate must fulfill the following criteria:
- The candidate should have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before December 31, 2023.
- The candidate should have passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects.
- The candidate should have secured a minimum of 50% marks (for General category) and 40% marks (for SC/ST/OBC category) in the qualifying exam.
Step 2: Registration The candidate needs to register for NEET on the official website of NTA. The registration process usually starts in the first week of December and ends in the first week of January.
Step 3: Admit Card After successful registration, the candidate will be able to download the NEET admit card from the official website. The admit card will contain the candidate’s roll number, exam center details, and other important information.
Step 4: Examination NEET is usually conducted in the month of May every year. The exam is conducted in offline mode, and the duration of the exam is 3 hours. The exam comprises 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Step 5: Result and Counselling The result of NEET is usually declared in the month of June. After the result, the qualified candidates need to participate in the counselling process conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for admission to various medical colleges.
Qualifying Criteria:
- For General category, a candidate must score at least 50th percentile in NEET to qualify.
- For SC/ST/OBC category, a candidate must score at least 40th percentile in NEET to qualify.
- For General-PH category, a candidate must score at least 45th percentile in NEET to qualify.
- For SC/ST/OBC-PH category, a candidate must score at least 40th percentile in NEET to qualify.
Note: The percentile score is calculated based on the highest marks obtained by the candidate in the NEET exam.
